As much as I would love to see the TSA go away, what you propose could never happen. Ever. I share your sentiment, but it is completely unrealistic to expect that something like this would ever work.

I have the brochure the State of Florida sends to everyone applying for a carry permit right here in front of me. It describes the circumstances under which deadly force may be used lawfully in Florida. It’s pretty much what you say: only to prevent death or serious injury of yourself or another person, or to prevent a forcible felony like rape. Verbal threats are -not- an acceptable reason. The attacker must make an overt act that indicates he intends to carry out the threat.

The last section of the brochure I think explains why the police failed to arrest Zimmerman for the shooting. It briefly describes what we call the “stand your ground” law. The brochure says, “On October 1, 2005, changes to Chapter 776, Florida Statutes, became effective. The changes relate to [...] creating immunity from criminal prosecution or civil action for using deadly force; the definition of the term “criminal prosecution”; authorizing a law enforcement agency to investigate the use of deadly force but prohibiting the agency from arresting the person unless the agency determines that there is probable cause that the force the person used was unlawful;[...]“

He sure might have done that. But then, he didn’t clear the chamber, he loaded the chamber and the reporter or police were wrong in the description. I’m only a stickler for that sort of thing because non-gun people look at guns as somehow magical. They aren’t. If you removed the magazine and cleared the chamber, the gun would be unloaded. It’s not magic.

As far as the kids, they love cleaning the guns. They love loading the magazines too. Basically they seem to love doing stuff with their parents. I’m sure they will get over that soon enough.

You’re supposed to drop the mag -then- clear the chamber. Otherwise you just end up chambering another round. If the boy did it the way the article said (which I wouldn’t bet money on) he could end up with one in the pipe.

I miss the things my kids used to “accidentally” do. The best was when my oldest daughter, age 9, “accidentally” duct taped her sister to the bedpost and poured Kool-aid on her.

If you really want to quell your kids’ curiosity about your guns, make the kids clean them after every trip to the range.

I wonder how many of those things I’ve bought in the 2 years my son has been playing. (grin)

This guy is an idiot, he wrote what everyone wanted to read, what everyone assumed was going on at Foxconn. However, most people won’t care about the “dramtic license” use…they’ll actually be relieved, because they can now enjoy their iPads guilt-free.
